The businessman and philanthropist revealed this good news at the institution on Sunday, May 19, when he visited the all-male college in Atlanta, United States (US), to speak to the graduating class. According to CBS News, he said: “On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus,” said Smith, who dropped a $40 million surprise during his commencement address Sunday, with a promise to pay off every penny of their student loans.
“This is my class, 2019, and my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans.” The announcement was no doubt met with joy and relief among the students as they realized that they could have a fresh start after college without the burden of owing huge amounts. One of the recently graduated students, Dwytt Lewis, whose $150,000 debt was paid off, explained that he felt like a huge weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Lewis danced across the stage after learning about the billionaire’s gift to the students.
Speaking to CBS News correspondent he added that he is so motivated to change the world. He said: “It’s just an overwhelming feeling, in a good way. I’m so motivated to go change the world.” Lewis also spoke on how the news made him feel.
“Wow, okay, I’m going into a few hundred thousand dollars in debt,’ right? And then your last 30 seconds of being an undergrad student, someone tells you, ‘I’m taking the burden of your student loan; go change the world”, Lewis said. This is wonderful news. The graduates will no doubt be motivated to pay it forward in society.
