PATERNITY FRAUD IN NIGERIA AND THE WAY FORWARD

By Michael Kizito Okenwa (MKO)

DNA (paternity) testing is the use of DNA profiling (genetic fingerprinting) to determine whether a man and a child are biologically related.

According to medical experts, DNA paternity testing is the most accurate form of paternity testing possible.

If the DNA patterns between mother, child, and the alleged father match on every DNA probe, the likelihood of paternity is 99.9 percent.

It’s also imperative to note that the test can also determine the likelihood of someone being a biological grandparent to a grandchild.

One of the major challenges facing the contemporary African Society is the issue of paternity fraud.

Paternity fraud is the pretence that a man is the legitimate and biological father of a child. It’s a calculated act which usually occurs when a woman deliberately misidentifies a man as the biological and legitimate father of her child.

This case which has turned to be a norm in Nigeria considering the high level of infidelity, adultery and promiscuity by married women is one of the highest act of wickedness and Man’s inhumanity to fellow Man.

Currently, Nigeria has the highest rate of paternity fraud in Africa and the second highest in the world after Jamaica. Three out of 10 Nigerian Men are not biological fathers of their children.

This was reported by Saturday Vanguard through their investigative journalism from the results they received from major centres offering DNA testing facilities in Lagos Nigeria.

Most women argue that paternity fraud in most cases is caused by child swap by the mid-wives immediately after birth but to ascertain the truth, maternity test should be carried out and if at the end the baby’s DNA matches that of the mother, there’s paternity fraud.

Paternity fraud in Nigeria if not controlled will result to wanton loss of lives of both the wive and husband in the future because not all men can take the pain.

THE WAY FORWARD?

DNA TEST SHOULD BE MADE COMPULSORY AS A PREREQUISITE FOR BIRTH REGISTRATION. BIRTH CERTIFICATE NO DOUBT IS AN IMPORTANT IDENTIFICATION TOOL BUT TECHNICALLY, IT’S NOT A PROOF OF PATERNITY NEITHER CAN IT BE RECOGNIZED AS A LEGAL DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH PATERNITY.

In the traditional African society, it’s a heinous crime to impose a child within a clan talk more of planted paternity.

Globalization has made it possible for one to sit at the comfort of either his house or office and access the culture of other society.

Most of the stupid acts practiced by our women today are copied from other cultures with the help of Civilization and Globalization.

Since there’s no fear of God and respect to our culture in Marriages, I advice Nigerian Men to also move with the trend and take paternity testing serious.
