The Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp has arrested a 37-year-old man, Mr Louis Nwedebo, for allegedly demolishing the statue of the former governor of defunct Eastern Region, Dr Akanu Ibiam.
The suspect was equally accused of destroying the water fountain at the Abacha Roundabout in Abakaliki the capital city.
Parading the suspect, the state Commandant of the corp, Mrs Chinwe Kannu, said the suspect carried out the destruction alone, adding that it took the intervention of the NSCDC personnel to stop the “wicked act.”
“Our officers teamed up with the crowd to stop and arrest him,”
The suspect claimed that he was a Methodist cleric, saying he was inspired by God to demolish the statue and the fountain.
“The revelation I saw about the fountain is not good; I was directed by God to demolish the statue. The fountain and the statue are evil.
“I preach the gospel of the Lord to people to repent; I am not against anybody. The fountain and the statue are evil; that was why I attacked them.
However, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor David Umahi on Security, Dr Kenneth Ugballa, expressed sadness over the incident, saying the erection of the statue gulped N30m.
Ugballa urged the NSCDC to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and unravel those who aided or masterminded the action of the suspect.
“The suspect also destroyed the billboard of Governor David Umahi along the Afikpo-Abakaliki Expressway. He destroyed only the billboard with the governor’s picture, leaving alone others.”
