Nigeria’s Muhammad-Bande Emerges UN General Assembly President

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, has become the second Nigerian to emerge President of United Nations General Assembly.

Muhammad-Bande is emerging the 74th president and second Nigerian to hold office, after a retired military officer and diplomat, Joseph Garba, who held the position between 1989 and 1990.

He was elected today, through acclamation at the 87th plenary meeting of the Assembly in New York, United States.

The diplomat was the sole candidate for the position and will be inaugurated in September.
