Lagos Increase The Price Of Lake Rice To N17,000

Against its earlier promise, the Lagos state government fails to crash the price of its LAKE rice ahead of the Christmas celebration – Gbolahan Lawal, agriculture commissioner in Lagos, says the price increase is because of the cost of production and high demand for local rice.

The government also says a maximum of only two bags would be sold to each resident willing to buy The Lagos government on Tuesday, December 17, announced its decision to fix the price of LAKE rice, which it cultivates in collaboration with Kebbi state at N17,000 per 50 kilograms bag. The government said the price covers the yuletide. It is, however, against its earlier promise to crash the price of the product.

Prince Gbolahan Lawal, who heads the agriculture ministry, made the disclosure to journalists in Lagos. According to Lawal, who spoke at the Agricultural Development Authority (ADA), Oko-Oba, Agege, where the sales commenced officially, however, said an individual would only be allowed to buy two bags at a time. He said this is necessary to make it easy for many Lagosians interested in buying to make purchase.

He said the sales would begin in various centres across the state, but the commissioner said the 10 kilogramme bag was not available. Previously, a 50kg bag sold for N12,000, but Lawal said the increase is as a result of the cost of production by the farmers. Another reason for the increased price, he said, is because of the high demand for local rice by Nigerians since the closure of borders in the country. Flip Tv reports that the Lagos government had earlier announced that it would crash the price of rice so that residents of the state could buy it at an affordable price.

According to the public relations officer of the ministry of agriculture, Jide Lawal, the state government would taking delivery of LAKE rice in preparation for the 2019 Christmas celebration.
