Kano Rerun: Violence Breaks Out After Declaration Of Results

Violence broke out in Kano after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the result of Saturday’s supplementary poll in the state.

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday night announced the incumbent governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, winner of the governorship election in the State, thereby returning him for a second term in office.

However, violence erupted in the state Sunday night, as angry youths trooped out to force their way into the state’s INEC office, but were prevented by the police who fired teargas to dissolve the crowd of people.

The situation got worse when the Returning Officer for the collation of governorship rerun election, Bello BAllawhen Professor Bello Balla Shehu, declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as the winner of governorship election.

The youths were said to have taken over major roads in Kano, exposing residents to fear and tension.

Meanwhile, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in the state, Alhaji Suleiman Rabiu – Bichi, rejected the entire supplementary election, while describing the process as shameful and called for the cancellation of the exercise.
