Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu should be held responsible if the deadly coronavirus (Covid-19) spreads in schools and public places in the State.
The first index case of the Coronavirus in Nigeria is currently receiving treatment at the containment facility at Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Yaba, Lagos Mainland, with the State Government reassuring that residents need not panic as preventive measures have been adequately put in place.
But the PDP in Lagos State is accusing the State Government of not doing enough to contain any chance of a possible spread.
A statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party in Lagos, Taofik Gani urged the State House of Assembly to immediately approve for the relevant ministries and agencies to procure and flood the state with preventive gears, including masks, sanitizers, rather than accuse private dealers of hoarding and inflating their prices.
The party also urged the government to designate health personnel to visit public places and homes, while health officers should visit hospitals to inspect patients, saying that this was necessary as “many hospitals may not willingly disclose their convid19 patients.”
“Sanwo-Olu administration must be held responsible for any spread because the efforts to prevent the spread is very minimal and only needs the willingness and diligence of a “commander”.
“The APC and Sanwo-Olu government have deliberately looked the other way and pursuing frivolities like the purchase of expensive cars to House members; accusing traders of inflating costs of masks and sanitizers.
“A responsible and responsive governor should have ordered large supplies of these needs so much that the traders will even sell cheaper at this time. Rather than do the needful, he is attempting to control private trading. The same way this APC has fooled themselves by attempting to control house rents where they have indeed not provided any House as alternatives for residents. We call on Lagosians, parents in particular to hold Sanwo-Olu responsible for the spread in schools, public places. The monies in the 2020 budget for contingencies, etc. is more than enough to meet the cost of this preventive accessories,” the party said.
Gani urged Lagosians to sit at home if the State Government does not ensure that free masks and other safety accessories do not get to public, private schools, motor parks, ministries, agencies and other public places within 72 hours, adding that there was no better time for the government to show its seriousness to curb the spread of the virus.
