In a bid to curb the abuse of drugs and self-medication, the Oyo State House of Assembly has implored the state government to strive towards sensitizing the public on its hazards.
A member of the house, Honourable Gbenga Oyekola bemoaned the continuous abuse of tramadol, codeine and other drugs without prescription in a motion, titled “a call on the public, to avoid self-medication drug abuse and desist taking drugs without a prescription”
Oyekola stated that criminal activities are carried out in society, under the influence of hard drugs.
He further lamented the uneven access to medical services in government and private institution, while urging the health institutions to be cautious in prescribing tramadol, codeine and other similar drugs to patients.
In the same vein, hon. Bolanle Agbaje of Ibadan North1 called on the government to ban public hawking of drugs.
Similarly, the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Olagunju Ojo advised members of the public to avoid self-medication, while also calling on the government to ensure that health institutions across the state are made to restrict the purchase of tramadol
