Several traders that belongs to Hausa ethnic group, protested the killing of one of them on Thursday by the Operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital.
It was gathered that the SARS operatives pursued a suspected internet fraudster, better known as ‘yahoo boy’, into Olomore Market, Abeokuta in Ogun State. However, the SARS operatives, in a bid to stop the suspected fraudster from escaping, fired shots that hit two Hausa traders, killing one instantly and injuring the other.
Angered by the incident, Hausa traders selling onions, pepper, tomatoes, yam and fruits in the market protested violently, smashing objects, including the operational vehicle of the Ogun State-owned Television broadcasting station and many other properties in sight.
The traders in Olomore market were soon joined by those from nearby Lafenwa market, who got wind of the shooting and took to the Lafenwa – Abeokuta – Lagos expressway, disrupting traffic flow.
They marched towards Olomore with bonfires mounted in various locations on the ever-busy road.
Many fled in different directions seeking where to hide from harm.
Business activities came to an abrupt end.
The Punch Newspaper in a report on the incident said the deceased was shot in the head.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said he was away from Abeokuta but would soon arrive Abeokuta to brief newsmen on the true version of the report
According to The Punch, Oyeyemi disagreed that they were men of SARS, but, insisted that he would speak on the incident once he got back to Abeokuta from Sagamu where he went for an assignment.
The Police Command deployed some policemen in the area to calm the situation.
As of the time of leaving the scene, the situation had been calm while some aggrieved Hausa traders have been dispersed by the police.
