Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked military checkpoints in Biu Local government Area of Borno state, as many are feared dead.
Vigilantes in the area noted that the terrorists stormed Miringa village, some kilometres to Biu at about 6 pm, as hundreds of residents absconded from their homes and many were killed.
According to reports, the terrorists continuously fired gunshots at military personnel at checkpoints, killing many motorists and residents.
One of the residents who escaped the attack, Abdulrahman Miringa, said the terrorists exchanged gunfire with soldiers for about two hours.
“We thought it was a normal routine exercise by the military, but it became serious as there was confusion everywhere, we stayed back until past 8 pm, and the gun battle still continued as we saw flames at the military base of the Command School,” he said
“Hundreds of people from Miringa fled to Biu, I believe many lives would have been lost because many travellers ply that route.”
A vigilante source confirmed that the terrorists attacked two military checkpoints over a period for hours.
