The ongoing AFCON has proven to the world that football in Africa is pushing above its weight. Africa football is now becoming very competitive. The so-called underdogs have upset the sure bet teams. The weekend produced moments of shock and surprise to the world; when the underdogs stood their grounds and were victorious over the top dogs.
We saw Benin Republic who had managed 4 draws, 8 defeat and never a win in the games they have placed in all their AFCON outings. They have never passed the group stage. But on Friday they sent Morocco parking. They have not just passed the group stage this time with just one win but they are in the quarterfinals of the competition.
The weekend shock didn’t end there. Bafana Bafana of South Africa gave a sit at home order to the Pharaohs of Egypt. Base on Record, the Bafana Bafana has edge over the Pharaohs’, nevertheless; based on AFCON record the Egyptians happened to be the favourite. The match brought about the host country being asked to sit at home and watch the rest of the tournament without their team participating.
Debutant, the Barea of Madagascar is still taking the world of football by surprise. They fought hard against DR Congo. Congo pressed hard on them during the extra time phase and had about three clear cut chances to bury the Barea but as luck would have it the goal keep came to their rescue as well as the crossbar. On penalties, they are accurate and won DR Congo. The debutant and now the team to watch out for in the ongoing tournament.
Below is a pictograph of the results of the matches from Supersport:
From the results above we definitely are expecting very exciting and thrilling quarterfinals. The battle to win a place in the next round is to be fought on the field and not on papers. We hope to see better football and not violent play.
