Abia LG Chairman Slumps, Dies During Meeting

Transition Committee Chairman of Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia state, Onyekachi Okoro has been confirmed dead after  slumping during a meeting in Umuahia on January 9.

The People Democratic Party Chairman Mr Anthony Nwankwo, confirmed the incident to newsmen at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where the deceased was taken to for medical attention.

Nwankwo, who was also a close political ally of the deceased, said that he slumped after holding a meeting with some officials of the council in Umuahia.

He said: “The man had a meeting with the council’s Head of Service and Treasurer in Umuahia.

“Thereafter, he visited the house of our leader (name withheld). At the place, he went into the restroom.

“When he came out of the rest room, he started feeling some how and eventually slumped, he was quickly rushed to the hospital.”

He further said that the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Azubuike Onyebuchi, was immediately contacted and  he joined a medical team to carry out palpitation on him “to see if he could be resuscitated.” 

Adding that all efforts made to resuscitate him by a team of medical doctors were unsuccessful. It is speculated he died from a cardiac arrest as the doctors are yet to disclose the cause of death.

Late Onyekachi Okoro died barely a month after he resumed duty as the TC chairman of Arochukwu Local Government following his appointment in December 2019.
