The Presidential Candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the February 23 election, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, has advised the legislators-elect to elect their presiding officers on four criteria.
Mailafia’s advise in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria, came after the leadership tussle for who becomes the senate president and speaker of the house of representatives, before the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly.
The 9th assembly is set to be inaugurated on June 9 as soon as President Muhammadu Buhari issues a proclamation letter to that effect, meanwhile, lobbying has commenced over leadership.
Mailafia, who is also a former deputy governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said ”I would suggest four criteria. Firstly, don’t pick anyone who has skeletons in his cupboard. They should not have criminal records.”
“Secondly they should get people of the highest integrity, thirdly, they should get people who have the requisite experience; possibly, they are into their second or third term in parliament and lastly, they should get people that have human touch who can help our democracy move forward,’’ he said.
Mailafia noted that even if the presiding leaders of the 9th assembly would come from the All Progressives Congress (APC), those four criteria should be used as measures.
“The positions be for people that have experience in parliamentary duties and people that have the human touch,’’ he added.
