Turkey won their first ever gold in World Athletics Championships history when 27-year-old Ramil Guliyev unexpectedly won the 200m final ahead of favorites and 400m champion Wayde van Niekerk.
In a close and tight race, Guliyev won gold in a time 20.09 seconds, with South African Van Niekerk who had been in hunt to be the first 200m-400m double champion since America’s Micheal Johnson 22 years ago coming second 20.11 while Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards came third.
After winning gold, Ramil Guliyev said this is the best moment of his career.
“This is not a shock, but it does not feel real. I have shown my best throughout this competition. I delivered my best race at the right time. I’m so happy to be world champion. This is the best moment of my career.”
