Could it be a mind game or he is trying to take the pressure off himself and the players in general?
The Premier league was wowed last week when the Red Devils hammered West Ham in style with new signings Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic put up a sumptuous display but it seems Jose Mourinho isn’t allowed to be carried away with just one win, thereby backing his old club to retain the Premier League title this season.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that Chelsea much stronger than the last campaign and are in pole position to retain the Premier League.
With transfer targets hard to come by alongside losing Nemanja Matic to Manchester United combined with injuries, Chelsea Manager Antonio Conte admitted that retaining the Premier League will be a tough task after the Blues lost their first Premier League game of the new season, a surprise 3-2 home loss to Burnley last week at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho dismissed suggestions the Blues were weaker, however, and stated they should be the team to beat in 2017-18.
“When people say, for example, Chelsea lost an important midfield player, if you lose one but you buy Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater, for example, what’s the problem?” the manager said in Friday’s press conference when asked about Chelsea losing Matic.
“For me, the favorite is the champion — always. It is for some reason they were the champions,” he said.
“It doesn’t mean you’re going to win it. I just think it’s the stamp you have when you’re champions — that the next season you’re the favorite.”
