Kogi Speaker, Imam Resigns, Matthew Kolawole Takes Over

The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Umar Imam, has resigned and Hon. Matthew Kolawole has now taken charge as the new Speaker.
His resignation on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, is considered to be an attempt to avoid being impeached by the state’s lawmakers during Wednesday’s plenary session

The embattled former speaker’s resignation was announced by the Deputy Speaker, Hassan Abdullahi Baiwa member representing Okura constituency who presided over the House sitting on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the member representing Kabba Bunnu constituency, Matthew Kolawole has been elected the new speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly.

Kolawole’s election came following his nomination by the member representing Ankpa 1, Ahmed Mohammed which was seconded by the member representing Okehi constituency, Abdulkareem Kekere.

According to the Punch, the Chief Press Secretary to the former speaker, Ali Yakubu, did not deny or confirm the story, but noted that there was a proclamation on Tuesday evening convening the Assembly for a special session on Wednesday, saying, “Let’s wait for official confirmation from the House today.”
