The board chairman and co-founder of Costco Wholesale Corp, Jeff Brotman is dead.
Jeff Brotman, 74, passed away in his sleep at his home in Medina, Washington, his brother Michel Brotman told The Seattle Times.
Brotman, who grew up in Tacoma, Washington, was a lawyer before turning to entrepreneurship. He helped start the Costco chain in 1982 with Jim Sinegal, who went on to become the company’s longtime chief executive officer.
He first served as chairman of the board, but since 1994 he’s been chairman of the company.
The company operates 736 warehouses worldwide – more than 500 in the U.S. alone – and is worth about $70 billion.
