Cincinnati Open: Top Seeds Venus Williams, Kerber Crashes

Veteran American tennis player Venus Williams has crashed out of the Cincinnati Open.

The world number nine lost to Australian player Ashleigh Barty ranked world no 48 6-3 2-6 6-2 in the second round.

Barty, 21, was honored to have beaten the multiple Grand Slam winner.

“It’s an honour to walk out on the the same court as Venus, to play against her and share the court with her,” Barty said.

“She’s a genuine champion of the game and has, I think, paved the way for us young players coming through so to play like I did, I’m really excited.”

Barty will play world number five Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-4 in the third round.

Meanwhile, third ranked German player, Angelique Kerber lost to Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 1-6 7-6 to also crash out.

American Madison Keys also made a safe passage to the next round beating Daria Kasatkina 6-2 6-1 to set up a match against fourth seed and Wimbledon champion Gabine Muguruza.
