Cincinnati Open: Halep, Konta, Venus Ease To Second Round

The Cincinnati Open began in Ohio, USA with exciting first results. As expected, top seeds eased into the second round but there was an early exit for French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko and world number 10 Agniezka Radwanska.

World number two Simona Halep beat American qualifier Taylor Townsend 6-4 6-1 while Britain’s Johanna Konta made a safe passage to the next round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Kiki Bertens.

Spaniard Garbine Muguruza beat Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil 6-2 6-0 and veteran American and world number nine Venus Williams beat fellow American Alison Riske 6-2 6-0 to also ease into the second round.

Early shock saw French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko losing 6-4 6-4 to  world number 85 Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia and world number 10 Agnieszka Radwanska also failed to progress beyond the first round after being knocked out by Germany’s Julia Goerges 6-4 6-4.
