In what could pass a miracle, underdogs Iceland on Saturday afternoon stunned huge favourites Argentina, battling out a one-all draw in the Group D opener of the on-going 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Contrary to expectations, the Icelanders soaked up every pressure from the likes of Lionel Messi, from the blast of the referee’s whistle. Lionel Messi failed to get off the mark at the 2018 World Cup, missing a penalty as Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Iceland, in the first Group D game of the tournament.
The Argentines came into the tournament, as favourites to finish top of the group, that also has Nigeria and Croatia. They began on a good note, with Sergio Aguero lashing in the opener.
However, Iceland were level within four minutes. Alfred Finnbogason tucked the equalizer away, after confusion in the South Americans’ defence.

Messi had the chance to put his side 2-1 in the match, but his spot kick was saved brilliantly by Hannes Thor Halldorsson. Argentina face Croatia next, while Iceland play Nigeria.
