Ali Banat, an Australian businessman, was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, with doctors informing him that he only had several months to live. It proved to be a turning point for Banat, as he decided to turn his life around, having previously been all about a flashy lifestyle befitting his wealth.
He decided to sell most of his possession, including his own company before he moved to Congo where he set up a Muslim place of worship known as a Masjid. Despite doctor’s findings that he only had months to live, Banat, who hails from Greenacre, Sydney, went on to live two more years prior to his death on May 29.
“When you find out you’re sick or you don’t have much time to live, this is the last thing you want to chase. And that’s how we should live our lives every day.” Banat is quoted in one of his interviews. He also set up Muslims Around The World (MATW), a foundation he wanted to help connect needy people around the world.
His greatest plea was that people would be able to carry on his cause even after his death. True enough, Banat’s ardent followers have been able to donate up to KSh 99,550,434 (N356,390,554) to MATW.
