The prestigious Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) has released the nomination list for 2018. The event held at Wheat Baker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos last Friday night, witnessed by a galaxy of movie stars, diplomats and the media was anchored by a former beauty queen, Munachi Abii, and actor, Enyinnaya Nwigwe. Nigeria tops the list of nominations with 26 nominations from 21 different categories, writes BIODUN KUPOLUYI.
The list unveiled by film journalist, SHAIBU Hussein representing the AMAA’s Jury had two Nigerian films, Crossroads and Isoken head-to-head with seven nominations each. The two films will fight to clinch the awards in the following categories- Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor In a Leading Role, Best Nigerian Film and three others.
Coming close to Nigeria on the nomination list is South Africa with 16 nominations with Five Fingers for Marseilles directed by Michael Matthews leading in 10 different categories.
On the heels of South Africa is Ghana with six nominations from the film, Side Chics Gang directed by Peter Sedufia. The film also recorded three nominations in the Best Actress Category.
Actresses Kate Henshaw, Reine Swart, Jocelyn Dumas, Rahama Sadau, Dakore Egbuson-Akande and others were also nominated in various categories of the award.
In the Best Film Categories are Isoken – Nigeria, Five Fingers For Marseilles – South Africa, In My Country – Nigeria, The Blessed Vost (Les Bienheureux)- Algeria, Cross Roads – Nigeria, Road to Sunshine – Malawi, Siembamba – South Africa, Hotel Called Memory – Nigeria, Sidechics Gang – Ghana and The Lost Café – Nigeria.
It promises to be a keen contest among Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD) for his lead in Crossroads, Frank Donga in Hakunde, Sam Dede In MyCountry,, OC Ukeje PotatoPotato , Chris Atoh in Esohe, Sani Bouajla in Blessed Vost , Oros Mampofu in Lucky Specials and Vuyo Dabula – Five Fingers For Marseille in the BEST ACTOR IN A Leading Role.
Cross Roads directed by ace Television director, Seyi Siwoku of Jungle Films made an impressive haul as it bagged seven nominations in the following categories: Achievement In Production Design, Achievement In Costume Design, Best Nigerian Film, Best Actor In A Supporting Role, Best Actor In A Leading Role, Best Director and Best Film.
Lovers of African cinema will witness an epic battle among sisters in the BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE with Reine Swart – Siembamba , Okawa Shaznay –In My Country, Dakore Egbuson – Isoken , Nana Ama McBrown, Lydia Forson and Sika Osei – Sidechics Gang , Mariam Phiri – The Road To Sunrise, Tunde Aladese – The Lost Café , Joselyn Dumas – Potato Potahto and Kate Henshaw in ROTI, a film by acclaimed Nollywood director, Kunle Afolayan.
The Founder and Executive Producer of AMAA, Ms Peace Anyiam-Osigwe in her speech was excited to receive guests and she assured of a lifetime experience in Kigali.
Also at the event, the Ambassador of Rwanda to Nigeria, Satnislas Kamenzi announced that the country on the mountains that offers visas on arrival to visitors is waiting with heightened expectations to welcome visitors from all over the world to the 2,600 theatre seating Kigali Convention Centre in Kigali for the 8th African Movies Academy Awards (AMAA) September 22, 2018.
